SPECIAL DINOSAUR EXHIBITION “WELCOME HOME” OPENED AT THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Through a bilateral collaboration between the Government of Mongolia and the U.S. Government, a significant endeavor was undertaken to repatriate illegally exported dinosaur fossils from Mongolia to the United States, commencing in 2013. On February 19, 2024, the Natural History Museum of Mongolia received sixteen dinosaur fossils representing six distinct species, originally slated for sale in America. The special exhibition, titled "Welcome Home," now proudly showcases these repatriated dinosaur fossils alongside additional findings returned from the United States.
Within the confines of this exhibition, visitors can behold 21 fossils representing eight types of dinosaurs, including rare specimens exclusive to Mongolia such as the Tarbosaurus, Oviraptor, Protoceratops, Saurolophus, Ornithomimosauria, Psittacosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, and Ankylosaurus. These remarkable fossils are presented in various forms, including skulls, vertebrae, femurs, and dorsal vertebrae, offering a comprehensive glimpse into Mongolia's rich paleontological heritage.
In observance of the centennial anniversary of the establishment of the modern museum in Mongolia, a collaborative effort between the researchers of the Museum of Natural History and the Institute of Paleontology of the National Academy of Sciences has been initiated. This endeavor aims to conduct in-depth studies, reinforce conservation efforts, undertake restoration work, foster developmental initiatives, and promote the significance of these artifacts in accordance with the framework outlined in the Law on Cultural Heritage Protection. Through meticulous attention and strategic planning, these esteemed institutions endeavor to preserve and perpetuate Mongolia's cultural legacy for posterity.
