2021-07-25 162

The 44th Annual Meeting of the World Heritage Committee of the 1972 UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Natural and Cultural Heritage is being held online from 16 to 31 July 2021.

The conference is chaired by His Excellency Mr. Tian Xuejun, Deputy Minister of Education from Fuzhou, Chairman of the National Commission of UNESCO of the People's Republic of China and Chairman of the 44th Session of the World Heritage Committee.

The World Heritage Committee is composed of representatives of the 21 States Parties to the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Natural and Cultural Heritage, elected by the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention.

Based on the heritage nominated by the States Parties, the Committee identifies the world's unique natural and cultural heritage that need to be protected under the Convention, registers and excludes those heritage sites from the World Heritage List, and monitors the preservation of World Heritage sites.

At this conference, the following decision was made to discuss the heritage management plan of “Burkhan Khaldun Mountain and its surrounding sacred area” registered by Mongolia in the World Heritage List in 2015. These include:

  • Commended Mongolia for establishing a management authority for the conservation and protection of the heritage site and for accepting the requests set out in previous decisions;

  • Noting that Mongolia submitted its draft management plan to the World Heritage Center on time, it requested that the recommendations of the International Council for the Protection of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) be taken into account;

  • In assessing the impact of the “Burkhan Khaldun Mountain and Surrounding Sacred Areas” heritage, we were asked to provide information on the potential impact of the project on OUV or unique value;

  • It is requested that a report on the state of conservation of the heritage site and the implementation of the above activities, along with the final draft of the management plan, be sent to the World Heritage Center in 2022.

S.Uyanga, Secretary General of the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO, thanked China and the World Heritage Center for hosting the conference on behalf of Mongolia and said that the Government of Mongolia will use all its resources to implement this decision.
